Grief Counseling in Charlotte
Grief does not follow a schedule. It arrives in waves, sometimes months or years after everyone else has moved on, and it rarely looks the way we expect. Some days it is sadness. Other days it is anger, numbness, exhaustion, or guilt about laughing at a joke. If you are carrying a loss and wondering whether what you feel is normal, you are already asking the question grief counseling exists to answer: yes, and you do not have to carry it alone.
At Bareiter Counseling Center, our licensed therapists sit with people in the hardest seasons of their lives and help them find their footing again.
Loss Comes in Many Forms
The death of someone you love is the loss most people name first, but grief follows many kinds of goodbyes. Divorce and the end of a long relationship. A miscarriage or infertility. A diagnosis that changed the future you had planned. A child leaving home. The loss of a job, a home, a friendship, or an estranged family member who is still living. Even good changes can carry grief inside them.
Some of these losses are the kind the world sends casseroles for. Others are the kind you grieve quietly because no one around you quite counts them as losses. We count them. Every one of them deserves a place to be spoken.
How Grief Counseling Helps
Grief counseling is not about moving on or getting over it. Those phrases belong to people who have not been where you are. The work is learning to carry the loss differently, so it stops swallowing your days and starts taking its place inside a life that keeps going. Your therapist gives you a place where the loss can be spoken plainly, where the complicated feelings, including relief, anger, and guilt, are safe to say out loud, and where you can begin to rebuild routines, energy, and meaning at your own pace.
For some people that takes a season. For others it is longer work, especially when the loss was sudden, traumatic, or layered on top of older losses that never got their turn.
Our Approach: Depth Work, at Your Pace
Bareiter therapists work depth-oriented, which matters in grief. A new loss often wakes up older ones, and the way your family taught you to grieve, or taught you not to, shapes how the grief moves through you now. Your therapist listens for that history and works with all of it, gently and without pushing.
For some clients, words alone cannot reach the loss. Our expressive arts therapy offers another way in when talking feels impossible And for clients who want their faith walked alongside their grief, our therapists will integrate faith integrate Christian faith into counseling.
What to Expect in Grief Counseling at Bareiter
There is no script and no timetable. Your therapist begins with your story, at whatever pace you can tell it, and the sessions follow what you need: some weeks talking, some weeks planning how to survive the birthday or the anniversary, some weeks simply having one hour where you do not have to be okay. Sessions run 55 minutes, typically weekly to start. Current session fees are on our
rates page.
